LOCATION
Mangilao is located in the central part of Guam. It is also residing along the island’s gorgeous eastern coastline, providing spectacular ocean views. The village is approximately a twenty minute drive from both Anderson Air Force Base in Yigo and the U.S. Naval Station in Santa Rita. Mangilao lies between the villages of Barrigada and Chalan Pago. It also branches off into subdivisions of the village that border Dededo and Yigo.
LIVING
Mangilao is known as the capital for Guam’s Education. It serves as the home to two main collegiate schools on the island, the University of Guam and the Guam Community College. Many local residents who seek higher levels of education attend these institutions. These institutions also attract students from our neighboring Micronesian Islands.
The village seems to form around these two major educational institutions. Due to the attractiveness of these institutions and the other schools in the area, the village has become a melting pot rich with diversity. Adding to these educational institutions, the village is largely made up of residential homes, condominiums, and apartment complexes.
The village has a population of approximately 13,313 people, with more than 6,000 people travelling to the village for work. There are also many of the island’s residents that work in the area and choose to live in Mangilao to be closer to their work.
Mangilao does not have any major shopping outlets. However, there are many businesses located in the village. There are several government agencies located in Mangilao, including the Department of Public Health and Social Services, the Department of Agriculture, the Department of Corrections, and the Department of Youth Affairs. The village also provides a few grocery stores/supermarkets, gas stations, convenience stores, restaurants, banks, and other small businesses.
ACTIVITIES
The village of Mangilao serves as more than just a hub for educational institutions and higher learning opportunities. There are outdoor adventures waiting for you in the village. Marbo Cave and Pagat cave are the most popular caves on Guam for those seeking an adventure and enjoy the outdoors. You can enjoy adventurous hikes to Marbo Cave and experience the freshwater coastal cave, which was used by the Japanese back in WWII. Pagat Cave is another adventurous hike that will take you the island’s eastern coastline where you will find a sinkhole at the bottom of a cliff. Pagat Cave also has a deep freshwater pool and is popular hike amongst the island’s residents. Both caves are safe to swim in, and are visited frequently. In addition to fun-filled cave hikes, you can also hike what is called “Thousand Steps”. This hike takes you down a steep cliff to the beach area fronting the Magilao Golf Club.
The village also has a beautiful 18-hole golf course that is called the Onward Mangilao Golf Club. This pristine course will challenge your skills as a golfer and provide you with a breath-taking experience as you play the holes down by the ocean. It truly is a memorable experience.
